It's not all about babying your children into their adult years. Parenting an Adult child is different then handling a child that once lived under your roof, or made stupid decision during their twenty something years. Sons and daughter's aren't to be abandoned from parenting just because their in their forties they still need the guidance and support of their mother and father. What changes is how you provide that support and on what topics the support is needed.

When parenting an adult child your role really becomes and advisor to your child, more then a parent. They're seeking honest and sincere advice on topics and situations their facing for the first time. Chances are mom and dad have been in similar situations so they're best suited to help with the issue. So with that in mind here are a few advisor positions you can take when parenting and adult child.

Marriage Counselor

You'd think that since mom and day are or have been married at some point in time they'd make good marriage counselors. As it is for so man things we encounter in our life experience provides the best advice.

Stock Broker


At some point in time we all begin to invest in stocks, bonds, even real estate. Chances are not every investment over a lifetime is a winner so there have been times of up and down with financial situations. This places mom and dad in another great scenario to advise their children on what can go right and wrong. Not to suggest they can predict the future but they can give a road map for what to expect.

Financial Planner

We all have trouble balancing our finances at some point in our lives. So struggle with it their entire adult life. Pending mom and dad haven't always struggled with it themselves then they can likely help direct their 30 something children in their own financial struggles. Whether this might be financial assistance purchasing a home, or letting them know when they can't afford something such as a vacation trip or expensive toy.


Performance Motivation Coach


You cannot understand completely what it is that motivates children unless you've been a parent yourself at some time. Because of this no one can get a fire going under your kids like you can as a parent. If you're child needs a pick me up, this is one of the best things you can do when parenting an adult child. Encourage them or help bring them back to reality. You can see from these examples while it might not include food, clothing, and shelter your children still need your support in new ways when you're parenting an adult child.
